Two books by Robert Woody and Colleen Conway respectively. Excellent resources for music teachers interested in incorporating popular music into their teaching. Robert Woody discusses the incorporation of “non-traditional” music and music ensembles in the classroom and studio teaching. Traditional band and choir programs might attract about 20% of students. That means we are missing the opportunity to provide music instruction to 80% of the student population. Incorporating vernacular (secular) music styles can act as a catalyst to reach the other 80%.

Description

Vernacular Musicianship and Informal Learning – In addition to crafting a compelling case for popular music in music education, Robert Woody models the approaches for which he is advocating. Most importantly, he meets music educators – especially those with limited personal or pedagogical experiences in popular music – where they are. The use of reflective questions invites all readers to the table, and Woody skillfully navigates providing practical examples without falling into promoting prescriptive techniques.

Dr. Colleen Conway has created a resource that should be part of every private music instructor’s library. This book is comprehensive enough to offer even the most seasoned private instructor a different perspective.  As a public school administrator, it is also easy to see its value as a starting point for communication between the instructors and district personnel in districts with large private lesson programs.
