Bridging the Gap: Stories for Music Student Teaching Seminar is a collection of short stories for use during the student teaching semester. Using research-based fiction, each story is written from a music student teacher’s perspective, highlighting possible (even typical) scenarios encountered during the internship.
Designed to promote reflection, transferability, and a sense of “that could be me” for music student teachers. Names and stories are fictional, but topics and scenarios are derived from music education research and personal experience mentoring music student teachers. Nothing “new” to music student teachers—instead, the book serves as a tool for instructors and preservice educators to connect theories from university coursework to the school music classroom.
Private Music Lessons: A Manual for Teachers is written for any music teacher working with students in a private lesson setting. Lesson activities for teaching movement, rhythm, tonal understanding, reading notation, musical expression, creative music-making, and music listening are provided as well as chapters devoted to musical, cognitive, physical, and social and emotional development in elementary, middle school, and high school learners. Strategies are provided for starting a studio and maintaining a studio and ensuring student success at events such as solo and ensemble festivals.
