Description
Elementary and Middle School Band with a Focus on Musicianship presents an approach to teaching instrumental music which emphasizes understanding how children develop cognitively, physically, and musically. All eight contributing authors have taught elementary and middle school band, and their chapters highlight the importance of connecting movement, singing, playing by ear, composing, and improvising to reading and writing music which helps students become well-rounded musicians. Separate chapters are devoted to considering characteristics of elementary band (beginners) and middle school band students, as well as brass, woodwind, and percussion techniques. The final section of the book connects the skills needed on the instruments themselves to the choosing of repertoire, the planning of musicianship and repertoire focused lessons and general rehearsal procedures to foster learning. The goal is to help music teachers explore ways for their students to develop a lifelong love and understanding of music.
