Description

Mindful Musical Fundamentals contains sixty-four unique melodies that will provide players with a mental, musical warm-up while utilizing their fundamental skills. The melodies present short musical challenges in a variety of key areas and modes, allowing the player to mindfully engage in a music-making warm up. It can be used as a supplement to any other fundamentals or warm-up routine, or as a bridge between fundamentals and etude, solo, or excerpt practice. It can also be used on its own because it combines technical skills with varying musical styles. The melodies in this book require active musical decision-making that will engage the player’s mind.

The melodies in Part 1 are based on different scales, modes, and arpeggios. They will allow players to play melodic material in a key or mode instead of simply playing ascending or descending scales and arpeggios. Part 2 contains pure melodies that require players to utilize technical skills while further developing their musical fundamentals: tone in different registers, phrasing, articulation, and dynamics. The suggested way of using this book is to cycle through Part 1 and Part 2, playing anywhere from two to six melodies per part per day. The variety of key and octave options presented will ensure that the player has moved through the registers of their instrument in different keys/modes and styles each day.
